Dr. Scurran Selected for State Medical Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award

 

Barry L. Scurran, DPM, FACFAS  - “A True Visionary” – is the  Recipient of The California Podiatric Medical Association’s (CPMA) Lifetime Achievement Award.

 

“Barry is a truley gifted physician and surgeon, a renowned educator and a dedicated member of this Association and our profession,” said CPMA Executive Director Dr. Jon Hultman in presenting the award during the Organization’s 95th Annual House of Delegates in Anaheim, California in June.  “His positive, proactive and progressive leadership has been a tremendous asset, not only to this Association but to the entire podiatric medical profession.  And, fortunately for us, his vision, leadership and guidance has made The Western one of the premier scientific and educational podiatric programs in the world.”

Only the forth recipient of the 95-year old California Podiatric Medical Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr. Scurran currently serves as Physician-in-Chief for the Greater Southern Alameda Area for the Permanente Medical Group in Northern California with which he has been affiliated since 1974.  He served as Chief of Podiatric Surgery from 1975 to 1993 and was named Chief of Professional Education in 1989, Chief of Clinical Information Systems in 1995, and Director of Physician Support in 1998. He served as a Clinical Instructor at Stanford University School of Medicine from 1987 to 1993 and Clinical associate Professor of Surgery at the California College of Podiatric Medicine from 1978 to 1991.

A graduate of the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree, Dr. Scurran received his medical training at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM) where he was a Summa Cum Laude graduate and Valedictorian of OCPM’s 1973 graduating class.  A Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, he served as Chief Podiatric Medical Consultant for the Board of Podiatric Medicine (California’s licensing and regulatory authority for doctors of podiatric medicine) for a decade. 

Actively involved on the local, state and national levels on behalf of the patients and profession of podiatric medicine, Dr. Scurran served as president of the Northern California Kaiser Podiatric Medical Society before being elected to the CPMA Board of Directors, where he served as Director-at-large, Vice President, and President-Elect before becoming President of the California Podiatric Medical Association in 1998.  The following year (1999) he was elected President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).  Dr. Scurran has also served two terms on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.  He has served as an expert analyst for the Foot and Ankle Quarterly, is on the editorial advisory board of The Lower Extremity, and is editor of the textbook Foot and Ankle Trauma, first and second editions.

 

An internationally renowned and highly sought after speaker/lecturer, Dr. Scurran resides with his wife Hope in Alamo, California.
