On July 1, The American Board of Podiatric Surgery officially became the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS).

The name American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, which was approved by the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards, clarifies the anatomical scope of the podiatric surgical certification to the public, insurance industry, and governmental organizations.

The new name will not affect the board certification process. The ABFAS will continue to offer two certificates, Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Board Certified in Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery.

The board expects full implementation of the new name by 2017. Purchase of a certificate bearing the name American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery is not mandated but is encouraged.

ABPS are encouraged to shear information about the new name with the hospitals, surgery centers, independent practice associations, health maintenance organizations, etc., where you have medical privileges. And, to emphasize that the board certification process, standards, and policies are unchanged.
