CPMA Remembers Dr. Oliver S. Foster - A Man For All Seasons

A dynamic and driving force in podiatric medicine for over half a century, Oliver "Ollie" S. Foster passed away peacefully on March 17, 2016 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He was 79 years old.

During his long and illustrious career Dr. Foster held virtually every leadership position in the podiatric medical profession on both the State and national levels. He served as President of the Los Angeles County Podiatric Medical Society, President of the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), and President of the National Podiatric Medical Association, where he worked to improve opportunities for minority podiatrists. He served on the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM) Board of Trustees for nearly a decade and was a clinical off-campus instructor for 8 years. Dr. Foster also served on the national Podiatry Political Action Committee for more than two decades (severing as Chair for half that time), where he raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the podiatric medical profession.

Dr. Foster's list of honors and accomplishments bear out his passion for the profession. He was named California Podiatric Physician of the Year, received the American Podiatric Medical Association's Distinguished Service Citation, and was honored with the California Podiatric Medical Association's Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the Podiatry Management Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Foster was inducted into the PM Podiatric Hall of Fame in 2012.

A humanitarian and philanthropist, Dr. Foster was also very active in his local community. In 2012 he received the Los Angeles City Council's Community Service Award. The award was presented by Councilmember Herb Wesson who said:

"Our community owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Oliver Foster for his many contributions and his leadership in our community. His remarkable career reminds us that a truly committed individual can make a difference."

Known for his gregarious nature, devotion, zealous enthusiasm, and his ever-present smile, Dr. Foster leaves behind a pair of shoes not soon to be filled and a legacy of excellence that has proven to be invaluable in promoting the advancement of podiatric medicine and will be indispensable to the profession's future efforts.
