Medicare to require prior authorization of power mobility devices

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will require physicians in seven states, including California, to obtain prior authorization for motorized wheelchairs and other power mobility devices for Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries.

While it is being calling a demonstration project, CMS said prior authorization will ensure the delivery of necessary medical equipment and should reduce the number of high dollar fraud investigations. The demonstration is directed at beneficiaries who reside in seven states with high populations of fraud- and error-prone providers, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina and Texas.
